Social changes after the Civil War brought a number of Americans such increases in prosperity that the late 19th century was called the Gilded Age, which some Christians welcomed with a gospel of wealth. But industrialization and urbanization led to poverty and suffering for others, and the Social Gospel movement created institutions to help the poor and fought for reforms in working laws and conditions. In the 20th century, civil rights movements led by Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King Jr. were also informed by unique religious values and prayer practices.
