Johnson's legislative skills helped him win passage of the Great Society and the Voting Rights Act, important civil rights victories, but he was defeated by the Vietnam War. Martin Luther King's and Robert Kennedy's assassinations also shocked the nation during the tumultuous 60's. Nixon continued, while simultaneously trying to end, the Vietnam War. However, the Watergate affair made him the first president forced to resign.
