Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were two of the most iconic comedians in Hollywood history. Together they created some of the most memorable and hilarious moments in cinema history. One of their most beloved films is "Laurel & Hardy in Flying Deuces", released in 1939. The film begins with Laurel and Hardy as two bumbling, love-struck Americans in Paris. The comic duo has fallen madly in love with two beautiful French girls, Georgette and Colette. However, their chance at true love is disrupted when Hardy's character is rejected by Georgette's father, who insists that she marry a wealthy Frenchman.
In desperation, the two friends decide to join the French Foreign Legion, hoping that the rigors of military life will help them forget their broken hearts. They make several futile attempts to join the legion, before finally getting in. While in the legion, they meet a fellow soldier named Antoine, played by Charles B. Middleton.
As soon as they join the legion, they find out that it is not as glamorous as they thought it would be. They are subjected to harsh training, heavy labor, and are required to follow strict regulations. However, they somehow still find the time and the energy to execute some funny gags.
Their superior officer catches them in a minor infraction and orders them to be punished by cleaning the stables. While they are cleaning, the two friends notice a plane that flies over the barracks, and they immediately become obsessed with the idea of learning to fly it. When they ask Antoine if he can teach them how to fly, he agrees and they all spend all night sneaking around stealing the keys to the plane.
Once they have the keys, they are able to take off in the plane, but quickly find out that they do not know how to fly the plane, and they start to have trouble controlling it. They end up crashing the plane, and as a result, are court-martialed and sentenced to be executed the following morning.
Their execution is halted by an unexpected offer from Georgette, who has discovered the identity of the wealthy Frenchman she is supposed to marry. With her father's approval, she offers to marry Hardy's character in exchange for releasing Laurel and Hardy from the Foreign Legion. The friends are thrilled and are released from the legion, but with their usual slapstick trouble-clad comedic timing, they then end up in a wild chase involving a train.
Overall, "Laurel & Hardy in Flying Deuces" is a classic comedy that showcases the hilarious chemistry between Laurel and Hardy. While the plot may be simple, the film's gags and hilarious situations have made this movie a timeless classic that people still enjoy today. The movie is especially endearing because of the cultural insensitivity of the era that these two great comedians had to navigate in order for the films to appeal to audiences at the time.
