In Mercy, a reformed bad boy who turns his life around when he begins writing popular romances falls in love with the beautiful critic who pans his third novel. The writer, Johnny Ryan, finds this out only after flirting with the woman, for whom the movie is named, at a party celebrating the book's release, a gathering at which everyone else sings his praises.

Johnny isn't upset when he finds out Mercy has written the biting commentary. Instead, he's intrigued and wants to know what she finds so lacking in his writing. Mercy tells the handsome ladies' man, who apparently can seduce any woman he sets his sights on, that he's too shallow.

It seems Mercy has a very valid point. Though he makes his living writing about affairs of the heart, the cynical Johnny, a confirmed bachelor, knows little about love and doesn't really believe in it. His father, in fact, tells him that love is a myth, and Johnny tells a friend he writes about love as he sees it.

But Johnny's perception changes when he meets the mysterious Mercy Bennett, and she helps open his eyes to the pleasures, and the pains, of a real relationship. Her insight and honesty lead him to open up to her as he's never done with any other woman. The two wind up falling for each other and Johnny becomes a true believer in the power of love.

But happily ever after, a staple of most romance novels, appears to be an elusive concept for Johnny. When his world is shaken off its axis, he turns to an unlikely source for advice: his father.

Scott Caan wrote the screenplay and plays the male lead. He's the son of the iconic Hollywood actor James Caan, who plays Johnny's dad in this 2009 drama. This is the second cinematic release in which the two have appeared together, both times playing father and son.
