Most Wanted is a biographical crime drama film directed by Canadian filmmaker Daniel Roby. Inspired by true events that occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the movie follows the story of a young investigative journalist named Victor Malarek (Josh Hartnett) who is desperate to uncover the truth about a botched drug bust that led to the wrongful conviction of a young man in Thailand.
The film opens with a young Daniel Leger (Antoine Olivier Pilon), a former drug addict, leaving his home in Canada to embark on a backpacking trip across Asia. In Thailand, he is lured into a drug trafficking scheme and coerced into transporting heroin across borders. But after being arrested in Bangkok, he is held in a Thai prison awaiting trial.
Meanwhile, back in Canada, Malarek is a journalist at the bottom of his game, struggling to find a story that will earn him recognition. He hears about Leger's case and, sensing an injustice, he takes on the task of investigating everything about the case which occurred a few years ago. He is determined to uncover the truth and reveal it to the world.
As Malarek delves deeper, he discovers a tangled web of corruption, deceit and conspiracy, involving a notorious drug trafficker and several corrupt Canadian police officers. Even as he faces intense pressure from his own editors and authority, he doggedly continues to unspool the case, seeking justice for Leger.
As the film progresses, Malarek finds himself pushed to the brink, as he races against the clock to prove Leger's innocence before his hearing takes place. But will he be able to find the crucial evidence that proves Leger's innocence? And will the corrupt officials who orchestrated Leger's arrest allow their crimes to be exposed?
Most Wanted is a tense and gripping thriller that depicts the high stakes world of crime and journalism. Josh Hartnett delivers a nuanced performance as Malarek, capturing the passionate intensity of a man driven by his desire for justice, despite the personal cost. Meanwhile, Antoine Olivier Pilon delivers a powerful portrayal of an innocent man victimized by corrupt officials.
Alongside Hartnett and Pilon, the movie also features stellar performances by Stephen McHattie, Jim Gaffigan, and Amanda Crew.
The film is a compelling look at how corruption can lead to the destruction of innocent lives, and the courage it takes to stand up for the truth in the face of overwhelming odds. Daniel Roby's direction keeps the tension high throughout the film, and the screenplay by Roby and journalist/crime author Samuel Archibald is tightly woven and well-crafted.
