In the movie MST3K - The Day the Earth Froze, we see our beloved characters, Joel Hodgson as Joel Robinson, Jim Mallon as Gypsy, and Trace Beaulieu as Dr. Clayton Forrester, embark on a new adventure. The trio find themselves trapped on the Satellite of Love, where they're forced to watch terrible movies, and then made to critique them to their evil scientist overlords.

The movie kicks off with a tale based on Finnish mythology. It takes place in a small village, where the crops aren't growing, and the winters have grown longer and harsher. To make matters worse, a witch who lives in a nearby castle has cursed the village, leaving them unable to break the cycle of endless winter.

The villagers soon learn that an enchanted artifact, called the Sampo, has the power to stop the endless winter and break the witch's curse. But the Sampo is in the hands of the witch, who of course -- isn't willing to share. So, the lead protagonist, Lemminkainen, sets out on a mission to retrieve it.

While the story itself may sound interesting, the movie's execution falls flat. The acting is stiff and unconvincing, and the special effects are unimpressive at best. So much, so that the movie has become the butt of a lot of jokes on MST3K.

But that's where the comedic commentary from Joel, Trace, and Jim come in. The movie is mostly shown in black and white and the three hosts have fun with the ridiculous costumes and special effects that are present in the film. They throw in their trademark quips, puns, and observations, often lampooning the characters, the plot, and the subpar nature of the production. They trade snarky comments and witty observations, play off one another well, and there are some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments.

Other than the main characters, the supporting bots, Crow and Tom, also play an important role in the movie. They pop in and out to crack jokes, engage in the conversation, and sometimes even sing along to the movie's score.

One of the things that make the entire viewing experience unique is how the movie is paused every now and then so that Joel, Trace, and Jim can inject their commentary. The three jokers break down the movie into smaller, less daunting segments, and comment on it as if it were a bad home video rather than a movie.

But even with all the criticism of the movie, The Day The Earth Froze has its charms. The movie has a nostalgic charm to it, and the Finnish mythology storyline is unique and interesting. And if you're a fan of old-school sci-fi movies, there's still plenty to sink your teeth into.

Overall, the movie and the commentary are a perfect match. The jokes and the humor may not be for everyone, but if you're looking for a good laugh and enjoy some good-natured riffing on a so-bad-it's-good movie, then give MST3K - The Day the Earth Froze a chance.
