During his time as a FBI agent he was assigned to Russia, and he sold U.S. secrets to the U.S.S.R and the KGB for 20 years. As a reward the Russians gave him cash and diamonds. After the U.S.S.R collapse in 1991, he continued to give the Russians secret information. In 1998 he was arrested based on the evidence that was collected against him years prior. As of 2002, Robert Hanssen was sentenced to 15 years in prison with a possibility of parole.
