Ottaal is a 2014 Indian Malayalam-language drama film co-written and directed by Jayaraj. The film is based on Anton Chekhov's short story Vanka. The movie stars Shine Tom Chacko, Sabitha Jayaraaj, and Thomas G. Kannampuzha in the lead roles. The story of Ottaal revolves around Kuttappayi, a young boy who lost his parents in a flood and is forced to live with his grandfather, an old fisherman. The film portrays the bond between Kuttappayi and his loving grandfather and the struggles they both go through in life.

The movie opens up with Kuttappayi (played by Kumarakam Raghunath) writing a letter to Santa, asking him to come to his village and take him along with him to his place. The letter shows his innocent mind and how he is unaware of the cruel realities of life.

Kuttappayi's grandfather (played by Sabitha Jayaraaj) is an old man who loves his grandson more than anything in the world. He makes a living by fishing and often takes Kuttappayi along with him. The grandfather is aware of the poverty they are in and struggles to make ends meet, but he never forgets to teach Kuttappayi the importance of little things in life.

One day, Kuttappayi's grandfather gets an offer from a rich man to adopt Kuttappayi and give him a better life. The grandfather is initially tempted to accept the offer but then realizes that he can't let go of his grandson, who is the only reason for his living. He tells Kuttappayi that he has found a new Santa who will take him to his place.

Having planted hope for a better future in his grandson's mind, the grandfather decides to take him to a nearby city to watch a circus show. They start their journey, and that's when Kuttappayi comes across a school, where he meets a boy his age. The boy tells him about his school and how he enjoys studying there. Kuttappayi is fascinated by the idea of getting an education and decides that he wants to go to school too.

The story then takes an emotional turn as Kuttappayi and his grandfather face various obstacles on their journey. They face a series of mishaps and are left devastated at times. The film raises some serious questions about the existing social class differences and the lack of opportunities available for the underprivileged.

The movie is beautifully shot and well-directed, depicting the emotions of the characters brilliantly. The performances of the actors are exceptional, and they have done full justice to their respective roles. The film's music adds a soulful touch to the story, making it even more heart-touching.

Ottaal is an emotionally charged film that touches upon various aspects of life, including love, hope, loss, and struggles. The movie conveys a vital message about life, educating people about the importance of relationships and the need to appreciate little things in life. Overall, the movie is a must-watch for those who want to experience a captivating story of a young boy's journey towards a better life.
