Red Beard is a 1965 Akira Kurosawa film. Kurosawa is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century. Red Beard is about the relationship between a town doctor and his new trainee. The story is set in a 19th century district of Tokyo. The young trainee is Dr. Noboru Yasumoto is arrogant and ambitious. He expects to rise rapidly through the ranks of the Japanese medical establishment. He is assigned to a rural town to complete his medical training. His medical mentor is Dr. Kyojo Niide also known as Red Beard. The young trainee is furious about his assignment believing that Red Beard has little to offer him.
