English cinema pioneers Birt Acres and Robert Paul demonstrated the superiority of the camera Paul had designed in this popular early short. ROUGH SEA AT DOVER was shot outdoors, something that would remain rare for several years in other nations' films as equipment elsewhere was ill-suited to deal with conditions more challenging than an indoor studio. ROUGH SEA duly depicts waves pounding against the seawall at Dover, that locale immortalized in song for its "White Cliffs." - Dennis Harvey
