Saviour's Square is a truly emotional story, showing how war can change human lives in the worst possible way. This Polish movie, directed by Krzysztof Krauze and starring Beata Fudalej and Natan Gudejko, shows a glimpse of the horrors occurred during the Balkans War, but it’s not just another war movie. The plot revolves around two characters, a Catholic nun and a Serbian soldier, who meet unexpectedly during the conflict. Maria (Beata Fudalej), a devout Catholic who runs an orphanage, helps refugees who flee from the war. She witnesses first-hand the atrocities of the war, and even loses some of the children she was taking care of. As the war progresses, she becomes more and more disillusioned, as she realizes she cannot save everyone.

Enter Aleksandar (Natan Gudejko), a Serbian ex-soldier with a troubled past. He arrives in the middle of the night, wounded and seeking shelter. Despite Maria’s initial hesitation and mistrust, she lets him in, and helps him recover. Through the bond that develops between the two, the movie portrays how two very different people can find common ground, despite their divergent backgrounds.

However, their short-lived peaceful existence comes to an abrupt end, when soldiers come to take Aleksandar away. The situation ends in tragedy, pushing Maria over the edge. She decides to take matters into her own hands, and enlists a group of people to help her escape with some of the orphans. They take on the risky task of crossing a dangerous war-torn land to reach safety.

The movie’s atmosphere is bleak and disturbing, and beautifully depicts the pain of the characters, who are all more or less affected by the war. The director does not hold back in showing the stark contrast between the living conditions of the orphans and the luxurious surroundings of the wealthy people who pretend not to hear and see anything outside of their walls. The performances in the movie are remarkable, and the story is well told, so it captivates the audience from the beginning.

Savior's Square does an excellent job of showing how the war affects all aspects of human life. From the displaced orphans, to the soldiers who have lost themselves on the frontlines, and even to the innocent bystanders who witness the horrors from afar, everyone experiences the harsh realities of war in their own way. It’s definitely not an easy movie to watch, but it’s one that leaves a strong impression.

Overall, Savior's Square is a must-watch movie for those who want to understand how war affects society. It’s a perfect example of how much change and tragedy war can bring about, and it definitely showcases the vulnerability of human beings when faced with extreme conditions. If you’re looking for a movie that’s both thought-provoking and heart-wrenching, Savior's Square is a choice that won’t disappoint.
