Son of Godzilla is a Japanese monster movie that came out in 1967. It is the 8th film in the series of Godzilla movies, being directed by Jun Fukuda with Sadamasa Arikawa in charge of the special effects. Fans will want to take note, that Son of Godzilla is also the 2nd of the monster island themed Godzilla movies. Son of Godzilla begins with a weather manipulation system that is being developed by a group of scientists. Tests of the secret weather system are stopped by interference from an unexplained signal emanation from within the testing island. Also gigantic praying mantises have begun to appear on the island, these creatures are mutated by a radioactive storm caused by a detonated balloon device accidentally. While observing these overgrown insects, the scientists discover that they have unearthed an unusually large egg from underground within the island. The hatchling which eventually comes from the egg is a baby Godzilla, named Minilla. The baby has been crying out for its father, the fully grown and destructive Godzilla. After destroying the test base and the giant mantises, Godzilla takes on protection of the baby and begins to show Minilla how to act like a real monster. Son of Godzilla has a typical monster movie plot for the most part, but is important in terms of the Godzilla series. Godzilla and son take on further mutant insects and fight for their survival, until they become trapped when scientists freeze their tropical hideaway. Together the two monster family goes into a deep hibernation, waiting to wreck havoc another day. Although they are also both unwitting heroes, as they save mankind from the hordes of insect giants. Thus ends the film Son of Godzilla. Son of Godzilla is representative of a great genre of the lower budget science fiction movies. This film like others in the Godzilla series, still stands the test of time for fans and new audiences who love monster movies.
