Supernova is a Dutch drama movie directed by Tamar van den Dop and released in 2014. The movie is set in a small village in the Netherlands called Zuidland where two teenage sisters, Meis and haar older sister, Arend, live with their father who is a beekeeper. Meis is a sensitive and imaginative girl who is struggling to come to terms with her mother's death. Arend, on the other hand, is a rebellious and adventurous teenager who is more interested in exploring her own sexuality than paying attention to her sister's emotional needs. Their father is distant and preoccupied with his bees, leaving the girls to fend for themselves.

The movie begins with Meis finding a dead bee in the garden and burying it in a matchbox. This symbolic act sets the tone for the rest of the film, as Meis becomes increasingly preoccupied with the idea of death and the fragility of life. She begins to see signs of death everywhere, from the dead birds on the roadside to the dying flowers in the garden.

Things take a turn for the worse when Arend starts a sexual relationship with a local teenage boy named Wybe. Meis is jealous of the attention that Wybe is giving her sister, and she becomes increasingly convinced that he is up to no good. Her fears are compounded when she discovers that Wybe has a secret he is keeping from Arend, and she becomes determined to uncover the truth.

Supernova is a slow and atmospheric film that explores themes of life, death, sexuality, and sisterhood. The performances by Gaite Jansen and Elise van't Laar, who play Meis and Arend respectively, are outstanding. Jansen's portrayal of Meis is particularly impressive, capturing both the innocence and the darkness of her character.

The cinematography is also a standout feature of the movie, with director Tamar van den Dop using the natural beauty of the Dutch landscape to great effect. The scenes of Meis wandering through the fields and forests of Zuidland are hauntingly beautiful, and the contrast between the idyllic scenery and the darker themes of the film is striking.

Overall, Supernova is a powerful and thought-provoking movie that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled. It may not be for everyone, as it is slow-paced and can feel meandering at times, but for those who are willing to surrender to its melancholic mood, it is a deeply rewarding experience.

Supernova is a 2014 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes.
