The legendary martial arts based movie The 36th Chamber of Shaolin is an action movie produced and distributed by the Hng Kong based company The Shaw Brothers. Since its release in 1978 the movie has achieved almost mythical status amongst fans of the martial arts genre and maintains a position as one of the most influential movies in the genre. The success of The 36th Chamber of Shaolin saw a number of sequels follow, including the almost as popular Return to the 36th Chamber that saw actor Gordon Liu move to a new role after earlier playing the legendary figure of San Te. The 115 minute movie was directed by Liu Chin and written by I Kuang and was released in the Mandarin language with dubbed versions released across Europe and North America. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin tells a fictional story based on the life of real life CHinese revolutionary San Te, played by Gordon Liu. San Te is depicted as living in a small village under the oppressive rule of the Chinese Manchu government; as a student of a local kung fu master San Te and his fellow martial arts students take part in a revolt against the Manchu governor of their region. The revolt is put down by the Chinese officials who ban the martial arts school and murder a number of San Te's teachers and fellow students. San Te makes his way to a monastery where he is rejected by the monks before the Shaolin chief monk finally agrees to train San Te in the 35 chambers of training within the monastery. After becoming the best and fastest learning student in the monastery San Te is sent out of the monastery in secret after completing all 35 chambers. Returning to his hometown San Te secretly trains the local people in the skills of the Shaolin monks and leads a successful rebellion against the Manchu government. After defeating the local governor San Te establoshed the 36th chamber of learning at the Shaolin temple allowing local people to learn martial arts for their own defense.
