The Mender is a 2014 sci-fi thriller that explores the philosophical implications of time travel. Directed by Billy Senese, the movie stars Geoffrey Kennedy, Clayton Farris, Marcienne Dwyer and Alison England in lead roles. The film opens with a cryptic scene of a man lying on the ground, gasping for breath. As the camera zooms out, we see that he is in a dark, desolate landscape, surrounded by ruins of a city. The man is identified as Michael (Geoffrey Kennedy), a doctor who has been sent back in time to prevent a catastrophic event that will kill millions of people.

Michael's mission is to find a girl named Alison (Marcienne Dwyer), who is the key to preventing the disaster. To complicate matters, Michael discovers that Alison is also a time traveler, and has been sent back to the present day to find him.

As the two travelers navigate their way through time, they encounter a group of dangerous thugs who are also after Alison. The leader of the gang is played by Clayton Farris, who delivers a menacing performance as a ruthless killer.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Michael discovers that he has a personal connection to Alison, and that his mission may be more complicated than he initially thought. As the two travelers race against time to fulfill their mission, they must also confront their moral and ethical quandaries about the nature of time travel.

Despite its low-budget origins, The Mender is an impressive achievement in sci-fi storytelling. Director Billy Senese creates a gritty, post-apocalyptic world that feels both haunting and authentic. The film is shot in muted tones, with plenty of shadows and bleak vistas to create a sense of unease and foreboding.

The performances in the film are uniformly strong, with Geoffrey Kennedy and Marcienne Dwyer carrying the bulk of the drama. Kennedy brings a stoic, contemplative presence to his role as the time traveler, while Dwyer injects a sense of vulnerability and determination into her portrayal of Alison.

Clayton Farris is a standout as the ruthless gang leader, bringing a sense of danger and unpredictability to his scenes. Alison England also delivers a memorable performance as Michael's boss, who provides a steady source of guidance and support throughout the film.

One of the standout features of The Mender is its handling of time travel as a narrative device. Unlike many other sci-fi stories that rely on time travel as a gimmick or a way to facilitate plot twists, The Mender takes a more philosophical approach. The film raises questions about the nature of time, destiny, and free will, and asks the audience to contemplate the implications of manipulating the flow of time.

At its core, The Mender is a cerebral, thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that combines elements of action, drama, and philosophy. The film may not have the flashy special effects or big-name stars of other sci-fi blockbusters, but it makes up for it with a compelling story and a strong sense of atmosphere. Fans of intelligent, character-driven sci-fi will find plenty to enjoy in this hidden gem of a film.
