The Way of the Cross is a gripping tale about the sacrifices and hardships faced by a young girl who takes upon herself the journey to holiness. Directed by Dietrich Bruggemann, this German movie is set in fourteen chapters, each of which represents a station of the cross, leading up to the crucifixion of Christ. The film stars Lea van Acken, a teenage actress in her debut role, who portrays a devout 14-year-old named Maria, caught in the throes of religious fanaticism.

Maria, a Catholic, from a conservative family, deeply obeys all church commandments and rituals while struggling with the personal and emotional upheavals of being a teenager. She so purposefully observes Lent that she downplays her physical and emotional well-being, often succumbing to self-flagellation and extreme fasting. She spends extensive time in prayer, visits a sick woman every day who later passes away, and tries desperately to be perfect. Her mother and grandmother, who are also deeply religious, encourage and follow in her footsteps. Meanwhile, her father, who has recently become an atheist, struggles to understand her religious zealotry.

The story begins with Maria attending church where the priest announces the commencement of Lent. Maria convinces her mother to force her to fast and abstain from socializing with her peers. Maria then meets an altar boy from her church who she begins to develop a lustful crush for. As the story progresses, Maria attempts to suppress her desires resulting in the extinction of her desire as well as affecting her physical well-being thoroughly.

She soon faces the challenges that come with the act of observing the Way of the Cross. In one instance, her mother prepares a mirror so that Maria can see her face while being whipped as penance for her sins, as Catholics have traditionally done in many communities – a custom that seems both cruel and unusual. In another, Maria refuses to take antibiotics, as doing so would break her fast. She becomes dangerously ill, requiring hospitalization.

The Way of the Cross is an intense experience, emotionally draining, and requires the viewer's utmost attention to comprehend the sacrifice of the young protagonist. The film offers a unique perspective on how religion, in some cases, can be a tangible oppressive force, inhibiting adherents from forming relationships, developing interpersonal communication, and living life freely.

Overall, the film is a nuanced look into the negative implications some religious practices may have on young people when encouraged or taken to an extreme, risking serious physical and emotional consequences. With exceptional acting, Bruggemann's direction, and thought-provoking content, The Way of the Cross is an unforgettable masterpiece.

The Way of the Cross is a 2006 documentary with a runtime of 39 minutes.
