In the film "Umbilical Cords," South African filmmaker Sarah Ping Nie Jones explores the relationship of mothers and daughters through three mother-daughter pairs. The three daughters, who all live in Cape Town, South Africa, all have long-distance relationships with their mothers, who live in Argentina, Lesotho and Indonesia. These women represent different nationalities and experiences, but their relationships with their mothers are colored by both love and conflict. The film looks at the different dynamics in these mother-daughter relationships and the issues of race and religion that influence them through interviews and footage of their daily lives.
