The 1913 movie What a Change of Clothes Did stars popular actors Maurice Costello, Clara Kimball Young, and Herbert Barry. It is a 15-minute silent black and white comedy film directed by C.J. Williams and released by Vitagraph Company of America. The movie is about a man named Augustus Tavish (played by Maurice Costello) who is unhappy with his wife's (played by Clara Kimball Young) behavior. She is always nagging him and seems to dominate him in every aspect of their relationship. Augustus decides to leave her and get a divorce. He goes to his lawyer and tells him that he wants to get out of his marriage, but the lawyer tells him that he needs to have some scandalous grounds for getting a divorce. Augustus is confused and doesn't know what to do.
While walking on the street, Augustus sees a man (played by Herbert Barry) who is selling clothes. The man has a fancy suit that catches Augustus's eye, and he decides to buy it. He puts on the suit and suddenly feels very confident and powerful. He decides to go into a restaurant where he knows his wife and her friends usually go to have lunch. Augustus sits at a table near them and orders a big meal. His wife and her friends start to notice him and are surprised to see him in a new suit. They start to flirt with him, and he enjoys the attention he is getting.
Augustus's wife doesn't recognize him and even starts to make out with him. Augustus is thrilled and decides to play along with the charade. He even invites his wife to a party that he is throwing that evening. When Augustus gets home, he takes off the suit and puts on his old clothes. His wife comes home from the party later that evening, and she is angry because she didn't recognize her husband at the party.
The next day, Augustus goes back to the clothes seller and buys another suit. This time he goes to a different restaurant and sees his wife and her friends again. They don't recognize him, and he decides to play along. Augustus invites them to another party that he is throwing that same evening. This time he wears a different suit and introduces himself as a different person to his wife and her friends.
The movie shows the humorous situations that take place as Augustus continues to wear different suits and introduces himself as different people to his wife and her friends. It also shows how his wife and her friends react to the attractive and wealthy men that he introduces himself as. At the same time, Augustus starts to realize that his wife is not as bad as he thought she was and starts to appreciate her more.
Overall, the movie is a light-hearted comedy that showcases the acting abilities of its lead actors. Through its simple but effective plot, the movie explores themes of perception, love, and humor. The movie is a good representation of the humor and wit that was prevalent in movies from the silent era of Hollywood.
