In Charite season 1 episode 2, the story continues in the world famous Berlin hospital during the year 1888. The episode is named simply "Episode 2" and it picks up just where the first one left off. The show primarily focuses on the hospital, the patients and the doctors, all of whom have their own stories to tell.

The episode starts with an introduction to the somewhat sinister Dr. Robert Koch, played by Justus von Dohnányi, who is working on developing the cure for tuberculosis. The patients in the ward are suffering from this disease and the suffering is depicted in a heart wrenching manner. The ward is full of desperation and despair as the illness has no known cure at that time. The doctors devoted to finding a cure continue to perform experiments on the patients, which has been a topic of controversy in their practice.

Meanwhile, a new patient arrives in the hospital; a woman named Agnes Kunze, played by Jane Chirwa. She is brought in by one of the doctors and is in a desperate state. Upon examination, it is discovered that she has an obstructed bowel which is causing her immense pain. The doctors immediately perform surgery on her, and the team is successful in saving her life. As the doctor and nurse on duty monitor her throughout the night, they discover that she is suffering from a viral infection called diphtheria. This comes as a shock to the entire medical team, as there has not been an outbreak of this disease in Berlin in more than 10 years.

The viewer also meets the ever enthusiastic Nurse Emma, played by Mala Emde, who is dedicated to helping the patients under her care. She is in love with one of the doctors, Dr. Robert Freytag, played by Maximilian Meyer-Bretschneider, who treats her kindly but is clearly not interested in any romantic attachments.

In the meantime, Nurse Ida, played by Alicia von Rittberg, is due to take her last examination before becoming a junior doctor. She is stressed and nervous, but excited to finally be given her chance to become a doctor at the hospital. She is befriended by one of the experts in her field, Dr. Behring, played by Thomas Loibl, who takes a keen interest in her progress. However, her excitement is dampened by the sudden dismissal of one of her colleagues, one of the nurses who was accused of stealing from one of the patients.

The episode also sees some of the main characters facing their own personal and professional struggles. One of the senior doctors is struggling with his own health issues, while Nurse Ida is struggling with her own self-doubt and lack of confidence. Emma is trying to find her place in a hospital she so deeply believes in, while Dr. Koch has his own demons to face.

As the episode ends, the hospital staff is dealing with the diphtheria outbreak which has started to spread. The doctors and nurses are seen frantically working, trying to develop a cure and provide care for the patients suffering from the disease. In a powerful scene, Nurse Emma holds a young patient, who sadly dies from the disease. It is a sad and poignant moment, which is acted with sensitivity and compassion.

Overall, the second episode of Charite season 1 is a must-watch for anyone who is interested in medical drama. The episode is thrilling, sad, and heartwarming all at the same time. The characters are well-developed and each has their own journey to undertake, which makes the show engaging and enjoyable to watch. The period detail is also impressive and adds to the overall atmosphere of the show.
