Honest Game Trailers is back with another episode, and this time, they're taking on one of the biggest RPG franchises of all time - Pokémon. Specifically, the Ruby and Sapphire versions of the game. From the looks of it, this episode promises to deliver everything fans of the original series love so much, with a healthy dose of humor and sarcasm thrown in for good measure.
The episode starts off with a brief overview of the game's history, which should be familiar to anyone who's played Pokémon before. You play a young trainer who sets out on a journey to capture and train as many Pokémon as possible, battling other trainers along the way to become the Pokémon Champion. Ruby and Sapphire follow this basic formula, but introduce a few new features that shake things up a bit.
One of the biggest changes in Ruby and Sapphire is the introduction of double battles. This adds a new dimension to battles, allowing you to use two Pokémon at once and forcing you to think more strategically about which ones to use. The show makes it clear that this is a welcome addition, even if it does lead to some frustrating moments when your partner Pokémon refuse to listen to your commands.
Another new feature is the addition of weather effects, which can impact battles in various ways. For example, a sunny day might increase the power of fire-type moves, while a hailstorm might damage all non-ice-type Pokémon in play. The show sees this as a positive addition, as it adds even more depth to the already complex battle system.
Of course, one of the key elements of any Pokémon game is the roster of available Pokémon. Ruby and Sapphire introduce 135 new creatures to catch and train, and the show has a lot of fun poking fun at some of the more ridiculous ones. They also point out that some fan-favorite Pokémon from previous games aren't available in Ruby and Sapphire, which may disappoint some players.
The show also touches on some of the new mechanics introduced in Ruby and Sapphire, such as the ability to plant berries to grow on your own, and you are able to create and decorate secret bases, thus adding some personalisation to the game's world. They even suggest that this could be seen as a precursor to the more recent Animal Crossing games in a way.
As with all Honest Game Trailers episodes, the humor is front and center. The show takes great delight in mocking some of the game's more tedious elements, such as the constant interruptions from NPCs and the long-winded exposition that occurs every time you encounter a new legendary Pokémon. They even poke fun at the game's graphics, noting that the sprites are blocky and the colors are all over the place.
All in all, this episode of Honest Game Trailers does a great job of encapsulating what makes Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire such a beloved entry in the franchise. By highlighting the game's strengths and weaknesses in an entertaining way, the show provides a great introduction for new players and a nostalgic trip down memory lane for veterans of the series.
