As a virtual world becomes more and more ubiquitous, the opportunities for players to engage with the medium have exploded. And one of the most fascinating ways to explore these opportunities is through an innovative webseries called Monster Factory. In season 1, episode 3, viewers are treated to a wild ride of hilarity, horror, and sheer absurdity as the series follows two gaming brothers, Justin and Griffin McElroy, as they create the most bizarre and monstrous characters they can using a variety of video game creation tools.
In "Thank You, CM Punk," the brothers take on the character creation tool in the popular wrestling game WWE 2K14. Their goal is to create four new WWE superstars to add to the already-packed roster of the game. As soon as they get started, however, things start to get weird. With odd choices of clothes and accessories, and disturbing shapes and sizes, some of these characters seem as though they'd be better suited for a horror game than a WWE wrestling match.
As the episode progresses, the brothers unleash their wild imaginations and create some truly outrageous characters. The commentary they provide as they construct each wrestler is hilarious, irreverent, and often borderline crass. They also draw on pop culture references, internet memes, and their general weirdness to create the most over-the-top wrestling characters possible.
One of the funniest moments in the episode comes as the brothers create a wrestler they dub "Big Money." This character is a rage-fueled businessman with a strange affinity for hats and sunglasses. As they build the character, they crack jokes about how their intended audience will never see him coming.
Another character that elicits a geeky laugh is "The Chosen One," an angelic wrestler who they claim has been sent from heaven to fight wrestlers. They imagine her as the perfect blend of religious imagery and dank internet culture, complete with a neon green aura and a pair of big fuzzy devil horns. And of course, they pick all the moves that would suit a heavenly wrestler—the flying knee strike, the moonsault, and the standing shooting star press.
As the McElroy brothers continue to create more bizarre characters, they come up with ridiculous backstories for them, filled with jokes and puns that are sure to make audiences chuckle. They also choose the most unlikely body types for their characters, including a forklift operator, a prison warden, and a vampire.
All the while, the brothers inject their own personalities into the show in a fun, off-the-cuff way. They break up the "serious" parts of the show with witty banter and running gags that only serve to make things more lighthearted and enjoyable.
The episode culminates in the brothers pitting their four new WWE superstars against each other in the ring in a hilarious brawl. The action is fast-paced, the commentary is witty, and the characters are so ridiculous that it's almost impossible not to laugh. Overall, the episode is a great example of how much fun you can have creating bizarre characters in video games, and how much humor and entertainment it can bring to the table.
Overall, Monster Factory season 1, episode 3, "Thank You, CM Punk," is a lot of fun. It's packed with humor, irreverence, and absurdity, and it's almost impossible not to laugh along with the McElroy brothers as they create their strange and comical WWE wrestlers. Whether you're a fan of wrestling games or not, there's sure to be something for everyone in this episode. So break out your creativity and get ready to laugh your socks off!
