As Bagpuss and his friends snooze in the window of Emily's shop, Gabriel the Toad visits with a problem. He has broken a precious china teapot while trying to catch a fly. In order to replace the teapot, Bagpuss imagines a mouse-powered mouse mill, which would produce tiny china items. The friends work together to create the mill, which is powered by the mice running in the wheel. However, the first attempt fails as the mice are too weak and tired to keep up with the demand for china items.
Determined to make it work, Emily, Gabriel, and the mice decide to try again and build an improved mouse mill with bigger wheels and better food for the mice. This time, the mice are able to produce beautiful china items, including a teapot for Gabriel. As they finish up their work, the friends hear a strange noise coming from an old trunk in the corner of the shop. They discover a box of wooden toy soldiers, who they bring to life by playing music on Bagpuss' organ.
The soldiers eagerly join in the fun, marching around and exploring their new surroundings. As the day comes to a close, Emily puts the soldiers back in their box and the friends settle down for another nap.
Throughout the episode, the sleepy, dreamlike world of Bagpuss is brought to life with beautiful animation and charming music. The concept of a mouse mill is imaginative and entertaining, and provides a fun challenge for the characters to overcome. The addition of the wooden toy soldiers adds a playful element to the episode and sets up the possibility for future adventures.
