The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs is back for its fourth season and kicks things off with Week 1: C.H.U.D. Hosted by horror aficionado Joe Bob Briggs, the show presents a double feature of the cult classic horror movie, C.H.U.D. (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers) and its sequel, C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud.

Joe Bob Briggs takes the audience on a nostalgic trip back to 1984 when C.H.U.D. was first released. Directed by Douglas Cheek, the movie stars John Heard as George Cooper, a photographer investigating a series of mysterious disappearances in New York City. Together with a local soup kitchen worker (Daniel Stern) and a police captain (Christopher Curry), they discover that the missing people have been turned into vicious, cannibalistic creatures living in the underground tunnels of the city.

The movie was not just a B-level horror flick but also touched upon social issues such as homelessness, pollution, and government negligence. Joe Bob Briggs admires how the movie was able to blend horror and social commentary without being preachy or boring.

But C.H.U.D. also had its own set of challenges during production. The design of the creatures was a huge undertaking and required innovative workarounds to bring them to life on screen. Joe Bob Briggs discusses the various incarnations of the creatures throughout the movie and how filmmakers utilized practical effects to make them look terrifying.

After a commercial break, Joe Bob Briggs returns to introduce the sequel, C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud. The audience is also treated to various trivia and behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the movie. Directed by David Irving and starring Brian Robbins as Steve, a high-school student who accidentally revives a C.H.U.D. while trying to impress his crush. Chaos ensues as the C.H.U.D. causes mayhem in the town, and it's up to Steve and his friends to stop him.

Joe Bob Briggs gleefully dissects the movie, pointing out its ridiculousness and highlighting its use of practical effects, which he feels were underappreciated during its release. He also examines the music score, which is drastically different from the first movie and adds humor to a horror movie that could have been taken too seriously.

Week 1: C.H.U.D. is not just a presentation of two movies, but it's also a deep dive into the making of these cult classics. Joe Bob Briggs brings a unique blend of humor, knowledge, and criticism to the table and makes the experience fun for fans of horror and casual viewers alike.

The episode also features segments such as "Drive-In Totals," where Joe Bob Briggs breaks down the gore, nudity, and violence in each movie. The "Mail Girl" segment features the lovely and talented Diana Prince reading viewer mail, and "Joe Bob's Last Call," where Joe Bob Briggs offers his final thoughts on the movies of the week.

Overall, Week 1: C.H.U.D. is a great start to the fourth season of The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, and fans will be eagerly anticipating next week's double feature.
