As the hunting season begins, The Wild Outdoors follows the Wiltse family as they embark on a turkey hunting adventure. The episode begins with the family arriving at their hunting lodge in the early morning, excited and ready to begin their hunt. The family includes father Tom, mother Sarah, and their two sons, Tim and Jake.
Once settled in, the family quickly sets out to scout the nearby hunting grounds for a good spot to set up. They split up into pairs with Tom and Tim heading in one direction while Sarah and Jake go in another. The Wiltse family has hunted together for years and they work together like a well-oiled machine. They are all avid hunters and have developed a great eye for spotting turkey activity.
After a few hours of scouting, the family reconvenes back at the lodge to discuss their findings. Tom reports that he spotted a few good-sized toms in a field down the road. Sarah reports that she saw a group of hens with their young poults that might be good to hunt. Tim and Jake report seeing several jakes in the woods nearby.
The family decides to split up again to cover more ground and improve their chances of finding a turkey to hunt. Tom and Tim head to the field where they previously spotted the toms. Sarah and Jake set up in a nearby woods where they saw the hens. Both groups settle in and wait for any signs of turkey activity.
After a few hours in their spots, Tim and Tom notice movement in the field. They look through their binoculars and spot a large tom strutting around the field. Tim prepares to take a shot while Tom calls out to the turkey to attract it closer. The turkey responds to Tom's calls and begins to make its way towards them.
Meanwhile, Sarah and Jake spot a group of hens nearby and decide to focus on them instead. They set up a decoy and start calling to the hens. After a while, a few of the hens start to approach their decoy. Jake prepares to take a shot while Sarah continues to call out to the hens to keep them close.
As the sun begins to set, the family reconvenes back at the lodge to share their experiences and discuss their plans for the next day. Tim and Tom report that they had a good encounter with a large tom, but it got away before they could get a clear shot. Sarah and Jake report that they had a good time calling to the hens, but didn't see any good shots.
The next day, the family sets out again to try their luck. They split up again, but this time Sarah and Tim go together while Tom and Jake go together. After a few hours, Sarah and Tim spot a group of toms near the woods. They quickly set up and prepare to take a shot. Meanwhile, Tom and Jake spot a group of jakes in a nearby field and decide to set up there.
Sarah and Tim have the toms in their sights but are patiently waiting for the perfect moment to take a shot. Tom and Jake spot a group of hens and decide to try and call them in. They set up a decoy and start calling out to the hens. The hens respond and start to make their way towards them.
As the day wears on, the family has several close encounters with turkey, but nothing seems to be working out for them. As the sun begins to set, they all meet back at the lodge feeling tired and a little defeated. They discuss their day and make plans for their final day of hunting.
On the last day of their trip, the family sets out with renewed determination. They once again split up and start searching for turkey. As the morning wears on, Sarah and Tim spot a group of toms in a clearing. They set up and prepare to take a shot. They have the toms in their sights and wait for the perfect moment to take a shot.
Back at the lodge, Tom and Jake are feeling discouraged. They haven't seen any turkey all morning and are starting to think they might not be successful in their hunt. Suddenly, they spot a large tom strutting towards them. They quickly set up and prepare to take a shot.
As the day wears on, the family has several close encounters with turkey, but nothing seems to be working out for them. As the sun begins to set, they all meet back at the lodge. This time, however, they are not feeling defeated. They had several close encounters and were able to get some good shots off.
The episode ends with the family sharing a delicious turkey dinner. They reflect on their trip and discuss their plans for next year's turkey hunt. It was a successful trip and the family is looking forward to many more successful hunts in the future.
