In season 9 episode 3 of Travel Man, host Richard Ayoade explores the historic city of Krakow, Poland. With a rich mix of cultures influenced by its history as a former capital of Poland, as well as its proximity to Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Krakow boasts a unique mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, rich Jewish cultural heritage and a strong national identity.

To start his adventure in Krakow, Richard visits the stunning Wawel Royal Castle, which dates back to the 14th century and is considered one of Poland's most important cultural landmarks. Here, he learns about the country's history, from the Polish kings who once ruled from the castle to the tragic events of World War II when the castle was occupied by Nazi forces. Richard also visits the State Rooms and the Armoury to see the beautiful interiors, as well as some of the incredible artefacts, weapons and armour on display.

Next, Richard heads over to the Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, which was once the centre of Jewish life in Krakow and has recently experienced a revival. Here, he meets up with local historian Anna Ciesielska, who takes him on a tour of the area and introduces him to some of the key locations, including the Remuh Synagogue and the Jewish Cemetery. Along the way, Richard learns about the vibrant Jewish community that once thrived in Krakow, as well as the tragic events of the Holocaust that decimated this community.

After this, Richard takes a quick break to indulge in some delicious Polish delicacies, including traditional pierogi, sausages and pickles at the famous Krakus Mound. This large man-made mound sits atop a hill and offers stunning panoramic views of the city, which Richard uses to soak up the stunning architecture and landscape of Krakow from afar.

In the second half of the episode, Richard explores the city's underground, visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which dates back over 700 years and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, Richard descends deep into the mine's tunnels, some of which span over 9 levels, and sees some incredible natural formations and architectural feats, all carved from salt. Along the way, he even visits a salt chapel and a salt lake, both of which are simply stunning.

Finally, Richard rounds off his visit to Krakow with a tour of the Kazimierz district, which has undergone something of a cultural revival in recent years. Here, he visits some of the area's best bars and eateries, sampling some delicious local craft beers and cocktails, perogies, and traditional Polish appetizers along the way. As always, Richard's sense of humor and keen eye for detail make for a thoroughly entertaining and informative travel experience.

Overall, this episode of Travel Man provides a wonderful glimpse into the rich history, culture and architecture of Krakow, Poland, one of Europe's most fascinating and underrated cities. With superb guides, mouth-watering meals, and breathtaking sights, Richard Ayoade's travel diary is the perfect way to explore and appreciate this wonderful destination.
