In 1910s rural Wales, a young poet named Ellis Evans, who used the pseudonym Hedd Wyn, aspires to compete in the National Eisteddfod poetry contest. Hedd Wyn's passion for poetry knows no bounds, but his hard-living ways and his personal connections to the local aristocracy set him at odds with his fellow Welshmen, who see the coming war as an opportunity to throw off the yoke of British imperialism.

Despite his reputation as a bit of a hell-raiser, Hedd Wyn's poetry is deeply traditional, and he aspires to promote and preserve the rich culture and history of his homeland. When the judge of the National Eisteddfod contest announces that the winner will receive a gold medal and ten pounds-a sum of money that could lift Hedd Wyn's family out of poverty-the poet redoubles his efforts and submits a series of stirring, heartfelt poems that touch the soul of anyone who reads them.

Unfortunately for Hedd Wyn, the contest also attracts the attention of British imperial authorities, who are eager to co-opt the event to promote their own interests. When tensions between the Welsh and British come to a head, Hedd Wyn finds himself caught between his love of poetry and country and his wavering loyalty to the authorities who seem determined to exploit it for their own gain.

With gripping scenes of warfare and political intrigue, stunning visuals of the Welsh countryside, and spot-on performances from the entire cast, Hedd Wyn is a moving tribute to the power of language, art, and culture to spark change in the world. Based on the Nobel Prize-winning poem of the same name by Welsh poet T. Gwynn Jones, this film is a perfect choice for anyone who loves poetry, history, or social commentary. With emotional resonance and powerful imagery, Hedd Wyn is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who watches it.
