Thomas Dagget thought it was his calling to be a priest but nightmares of angels killing each other caused him to abandon his faith and the church. Now he is a detective with the L.A.P.D. and receives a visit from a man by the name of Simon. Simon is an angel that fell to earth and tries to warn him of pending doom. Another angel by the name of Uziel has also fallen to earth and is looking for Simon but in the interim he gets killed. Investigating the death, Thomas goes to Uziel's apartment and finds a bizarre obituary for a war veteran by the name of Arnold Hawthorne that has just passed on in Chimney Rock, Arizona and a copy of a theology thesis that he had written himself.
Speaking with the coroner, Thomas is told that this body is like no other he has ever seen. The only thing found with the body was a hand-written bible that has a twenty-third chapter in the book of Revelations. Thomas sets about to read and translate the chapter and reveals a startling omen. This chapter speaks of a second war in heaven that is started by the angels. It also speaks of a very dark soul that will wander the earth and be used to cause mass destruction.
Thomas does not realize that Gabriel has returned to earth and has recruited another soul to help him. They now find Hawthorne's obituary and head over to Chimney Rock. Before anyone could arrive in Chimney Rock, Simon retrieved Hawthorne's soul and hid it in someone else. Thomas heads to Chimney Rock and he is then confronted by Gabriel who informs him that whoever possesses the soul of Hawthorne will decipher if evil or righteous wins. Now Thomas must find the person who possesses the soul and try to intercept the holy war that is beginning on earth.
