Kate Winslet and Family Escape as Richard Branson's House Engulfed in Flames What should have been a relaxing vacation staying on the posh island estate of one of the world's wealthiest men ended up being a potentially life-threatening experiencing for Kate WInslet and her family.

The "Mildred Pierce" star, her boyfriend Louis Dowler and children Mia and Joe were part of a 20-person group staying at eccentric British billionaire Richard Branson's island paradise when a fire started during a tropical storm burned down the house they were staying in.

According to an AP report, "the fire broke out around 4 a.m. during a tropical storm with lightning and high winds, and [Richard Branson's son] Sam managed to help evacuate Winslet and other guests from the house."

"Kate Winslet, her boyfriend and her family were there and Holly [Branson's daighter] and some of her friends were also staying," Richard Branson said. "My mother was there and they managed to get her out and she is fine."

Branson's company Virgin released a statement, saying:

"Whilst the cause at this stage is unknown, it is thought most likely due to a lightning strike. Whilst substantial damage was caused to the building, no guests or members of the Necker Island staff were hurt."
