In the crime drama film Believe Me: The Lisa McVey Story, a young woman is abducted and sexually assaulted. Having already been a long-time victim of abuse, she is able to fight back and free herself. But her struggle is just beginning, as she works to bring her rapist to justice. Lisa contemplates ending her life after years of sexual abuse by a family member. But suddenly, she finds herself in a fight to stay alive when she is abducted. In order to survive, Lisa develops a relationship with her captor and orchestrates her eventual release. Once Lisa is safely home, she discovers police and even her own family refuse to believe her. It's only when a veteran detective hears the details of her story that Lisa finally finds someone she can open up to. The film is based on a true story. Lisa McVey was kidnapped in 1984. Her abductor turned out to be a serial killer, and McVey is the only one of his victims to have survived. The fictionalized film was originally aired on the Lifetime cable network in 2018. It also aired on Canadian TV and had a brief theatrical release. It debuted on Netflix in 2021.
