In the 2020 movie Beyto, directed by Gitta Gsell, Burak Ates plays the titular character of Beyto, a young man who lives in a conservative Turkish family in Switzerland. Beyto has a passion for sailing and dreams of participating in the championship in Germany. However, his father wants him to carry on the family tradition and take over their Turkish restaurant business.

Beyto's life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Mike, played by Dimitri Stapfer. Mike is a free-spirited Swiss boy who falls in love with Beyto. The two become inseparable and their love blossoms over time. But, Beyto's family and community do not accept their relationship due to their differing backgrounds and traditions. The two protagonists are faced with hostility and discrimination from Beyto's father and the Turkish community. And as the pressure mounts, they must decide if their love is worth fighting for.

The movie starts with Beyto and his family arriving in Switzerland as part of a wave of so-called Gastarbeiter or guest workers, who arrived in Switzerland from 1960 onwards to fill a labour shortage. Beyto's father and mother set up a restaurant, where Beyto and his siblings work when they're not at school. Beyto is passionate about sailing and spends his free time on the lake, with his best friend Rico, whose family also owns a boat.

When Beyto meets Mike, who is also passionate about sailing, they start spending time together on the lake during which their feelings for each other grow. As their relationship deepens, Beyto becomes torn between his love for Mike and his loyalty to his family and his traditions. Although his friends and siblings are supportive of him and his love for Mike, his family are not. His father is determined to uphold the strict traditional values that he grew up with, which includes arranged marriage and heteronormative behaviour.

At a family gathering, attended by the Turkish community, Mike is introduced to Beyto's family. However, instead of being welcomed, the couple is derided and humiliated, with Beyto's father disowning him for being gay. The Turkish community also rallies around the family and they are collectively ostracised from the community and Beyto is forced to flee their home.

Beyto's story is one of courage as he musters the strength to leave his family, in order to live his life as a gay man. Through his journey, he discovers the importance of self-acceptance and the power of standing up against harassment and oppression. As he battles with loneliness and the loss of his loved ones, he also finds a supportive community in the form of a local sailing association.

The movie is an exploration of self-discovery and the struggle to find acceptance in a society that is not always inclusive. It highlights the pain that individuals face when they are pushed to conform to the values of their communities and the strength it takes to break free from those traditions.

In conclusion, Beyto is a heart-warming and thought-provoking movie that tells the story of a young man's struggle against the forces that would limit him to a life of conformity. With excellent performances by the cast and a powerful message, it is a movie that will resonate with audiences regardless of their backgrounds. It illuminates the struggles that many LGBTQIA+ communities face in conservative societies and the fight that must be waged against homophobia and discrimination.

Beyto is a 2021 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 43 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6.
