"What you can't see can hurt you."

Black Water is an 88 minute film about a three Australian young adults including Adam, an office worker; Grace, his wife; and Lee, her sister; embarking on a fishing trip in a backwoods marsh with a local guide and boat owner named Jim. Things quickly take a turn for the worse when their boat is capsized and Jim is devoured by a gigantic crocodile after the foursome boat into a lesser traveled channel at Jim's suggestion that there are much bigger fish in the area.

This horror film portrays the three remaining characters stranded in the tree above the marsh and trying desperately to figure out a way to escape. It explores human nature, though mostly through good natured people, and how human beings react when pitted against a hostile and predatory force that is bent on making them it's next meal. Tactical decisions are made by the characters to try and turn over the boat by going back into the water regardless of the inescapable knowledge that the crocodile is still waiting for them in the water, or climb over the trees to get to some dry land and hopefully escape or at least be able to signal for help.

The three are helplessly under prepared to handle the situation and the only way they have any chance of fighting back rather than fleeing is the gun that Jim brought in before they set out into the marsh. The crocodile stalks their every move throughout the entire film and patiently waits for it's chance to tear them apart whenever they take the necessary risk of entering the marsh's murky waters. Black Water has been praised for it's unnerving suspense and gripping tension that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.

Black Water has been compared to movies of the same genre involving similar situations such as Jaws and Lake Placid. One critic went so far as to say that Black Water "does for crocodiles what Jaws did for sharks". Black Water has also been praised for it's creative use of puppetry and other methods of special effects that do not involve the use or assistance of computer graphics by many, and some argue that this does add an element of realism in the movie not seen or felt in horror movies that take advantage of computer generated monsters and other special effects.
