In the action adventure fantasy film Black Widow, the superhero spy Natasha Romanoff is pitted against an evil force that wants to end her permanently. Without her friends from the Avengers, she has to take on the evildoers on her own. The film is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and takes place after the events of the film Captain America: Civil War. Black Widow was originally scheduled to be released in May 2020, but it was delayed at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The release date was then moved to November 2020, but it was delayed again when the pandemic raged on into the fall. It was delayed a third time when it was clear the pandemic wouldn't be over by May 2021. Disney settled on a release date of July 9, 2021 and also planned to release the film on the Disney+ streaming platform as the same time. Subscribers to Disney+ would need to pay an additional surcharge to view the film. Black Widow is the first theatrical film in the planned Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The phase also includes the Disney+ TV series WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Solider, and Loki, as well as many upcoming films and series.
