Boys on the Side
- 1 hr 55 min
“Boys on the Side” tells the story of three women who start on a cross country road trip and end up living together in Tucson Arizona. Whoopi Goldberg plays Jane, a singer whose career is stagnating. She is looking for a fresh start on the west coast. Mary-Louise Parker is Robin. Robin is retracing the journey she took as a child with her family. She is trying to recapture the happiness she knew then. Together they depart from New York City. They stop in Pittsburgh to visit Jane’s friend Holly. Holly’s abusive boyfriend, Nick, attacks both Jane and Holly. Holly stops him by hitting him with a baseball bat. They tie Nick up and hit the road. During the trip, they see a newspaper which tells them that Nick died of his injuries but decide to continue driving as if they haven’t seen the paper. During the journey Holly and Jane notice that Robin does not look good. In Tucson Arizona, Robin collapses and is taken to the hospital. That is when Jane and Holly learn that Jane has aids. The three women decide to stay in Tucson sharing a house. Together they deal with relationships, jobs and even the law when Holly gets arrested for Nick’s murder. Robin eventually dies of her disease, but her death is incidental to the movie which focuses on the relationships between the three women. “Boys on the Side” is a “chick flick” in every sense of the word. It has many features that women look for in movies. It focuses on relationship building instead of action scenes. The plot centers on women’s lives with their relationships being a secondary focus. Even murdered boyfriend Nick is ancillary to the real story which is how friendships are born, tested and endure no matter what life throws at them. “Boys on the Side” is a timeless classic and is still popular with women of all ages.
