A man is born in the Austrian mountains in the 19th century. He is seen as a stranger by many of the people in the village where he lives. Discovering a love of music, he begins to play the organ for his church. Soon, he finds a love for a woman who is the daughter of a neighbor. She marries someone else, and the young man considers a unique way to end his life.
