- 1 hr 36 min
Narrated by Edward Norton, Bustin' Down the Door provides a snapshot of the surfing boom of the 70's by following the particular story of a group of South African and Australian surfers. Through interviews with the subjects, including Wayne Bartholomew, Mark Richards, Shaun Tomson, and Peter Townsend, eye-witness testimony from the locals, and archive and new footage, we experience first-hand the culture clashes that occurred when surfers from other countries began to infiltrate a heretofore homogenous Hawaiian subculture. In addition to conflicts with local people, the young surfers must learn to master the reef breaks, tubes, pipelines of Hawaii to ride the offshore wind. The soundtrack is of its time and excellently curated, featuring The Stooges, The Eels, Leonard Cohen and David Bowie. The documentary charts how surfing moved from a Hawaiian tradition to a professional sport, and reflects upon surfing's current place in TV, movies, music and the larger culture.
