In the 1930s John was sentenced to death when he murdered a man while stealing a teddy bear for his daughters Christmas present. Twenty minutes before he is executed his sentenced is changed from an execution to life in prison. He is transferred to another prison where he is treated poorly by the prison staff and makes three friends. The men are conspiring to escape one of the prison officials take an interest in his art, giving John second thoughts. Now John must decide if he wants to finish out his sentence or to escape with the other men.
