Debdoot is a 1996 Indian drama film directed and produced by Anjan Choudhury. The enthralling story revolves around the life of protagonist Debdas, played by Mithun Chakraborty, who comes back from abroad after completing his higher studies to his hometown in Kolkata, West Bengal. There he meets his sister's friend, Ranu, portrayed by Sreelekha Mitra, who falls madly in love with him. Debdas, being naive and innocent, does not recognize her feelings towards him and instead starts falling for another woman named Sujata. Sujata is a rich and arrogant woman who is already engaged and about to get married soon.
The film takes a turn when Sujata's father invites Debdas to their house for dinner and puts a condition in front of him to marry his daughter in exchange for a large sum of money. But Debdas, being a man of principles, refuses the offer, and the truth about his love for Sujata comes out.
This is where the story becomes more profound, and the audience gets to see the real turmoil and agony that Debdas goes through. He is unable to confess to Sujata about his love for her due to societal norms and customs, and Sujata is unable to express her feelings as she is already engaged.
The film beautifully captures the emotions and struggle of Debdas, his love for Sujata, and the devastating effect it has on everyone's lives. It also portrays the harsh reality of social norms, traditions, and class differences prevalent in the society during the 90s.

Mithun Chakraborty's performance is commendable, and he portrays Debdas's vulnerability and inner turmoil with ease. The music of the film is another masterpiece, composed by Bappi Lahiri, and the songs like "Jibone Tumi Morone Tumi" and "Ami Tomar Chhaya" are still popular among the masses.
Overall, Debdoot is a poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and societal norms that leaves a lasting impression on the audience.
