Desecho (Debris) is a gripping drama/thriller movie directed by Julio Hernández Cordón and released in 2021. The movie, which features Spanish and English languages, brings together a group of international actors to tell a story about survival, hope, and the will to live. The plot follows Armando (Tenoch Huerta), a Mexican construction worker trying to make ends meet in the US. Armando is determined to send money back home to his family, but his boss has been withholding his wages. Frustrated and desperate, he decides to take matters into his own hands and confronts the boss, leading to a fatal accident. With the police on his trail, Armando goes on the run and finds refuge in a dumpsite in the outskirts of Los Angeles.

Out of luck and resources, Armando is forced to survive in the harsh conditions of the dumpsite. He comes across other undocumented immigrants, including a traumatized and mute woman, who become his only source of companionship in the vast wasteland. The group is threatened by ruthless coyotes - smugglers of human cargo - their deathly traps and the dangers of the area. As they work together to find a way out, Armando must overcome his guilt, fear of being caught, and face the challenges of the dumpsite.

The movie draws attention to the harsh realities of undocumented immigrants in the US, who are forced to live in the shadows and face constant threats of deportation, exploitation and inhumane living conditions. At the heart of the story is Armando's struggle to survive, while coming to terms with his past and building trust with his companions in the dumpsite. The movie does an excellent job of portraying the characters' desperation, hope, and resilience amid the oppressive conditions of the dumpsite.

Tenoch Huerta's performance as Armando is particularly noteworthy, delivering a realistic and heartfelt portrayal of a man pushed to his limit. Karren Karagulian, Hansel Ramirez, Daniyar, Abraham Luna, and Jorge Diaz also delivered impressive performances in their respective roles, which added depth and authenticity to the movie's characters.

The cinematography in Desecho (Debris) is breathtaking, depicting the dumpsite's bleakness and vastness accurately. The camera capturing long, uncut takes often makes the audience feel as if they are right there with the protagonists, experiencing every step of their journey. The music, too, complements the story's emotional core, enhancing the mood of the movie and driving the intense moments home.

Overall, Desecho (Debris) is a powerful and insightful movie that is definitely worth a watch. It addresses issues that are very present in our current society, and through its characters, it portrays the human side of undocumented immigrants who often go unnoticed. Hernández Cordón's direction and the work of a talented cast create a memorable and poignant story that will stay with viewers for a long time.
