Don't Hang Up is a 2016 horror-thriller film directed by Damien Macé and Alexis Wajsbrot. The movie follows two teenage pranksters, Sam (Gregg Sulkin) and Brady (Garrett Clayton), who have gained a significant online following for their risky and dangerous practical jokes. One night, while they are staying in for the evening, they receive a phone call from a mysterious stranger who seems to be watching their every move. The stranger begins to manipulate the boys, forcing them to play a deadly game that quickly spirals out of control. The film opens with one of Sam and Brady's pranks. They make a fake radio show that they use to prank call unsuspecting victims by mimicking radio hosts giving away concert tickets. After successfully pranking several people, they decide to call a random number and don't suspect what's about to happen. The person on the other end of the line initially seems like another victim, but things quickly take a dark turn when the caller starts to reveal that he knows more about Sam and Brady than they thought. The caller has a seemingly endless amount of information about the boys, including their social security numbers, addresses, and even their parents' names. The mood of the call quickly changes, and the caller takes on a menacing tone, informing the boys that he is watching them and that they will regret messing with him. The caller then tells them they have 3 choices: call for help, hang up the phone, or play a game of truth or dare. They choose to play the game. Throughout the game, the caller continues to manipulate and taunt the boys, and the stakes get higher and higher. If the boys fail to complete a dare or tell the truth, the caller threatens to harm them or their families. The game becomes increasingly twisted, with each round leading to more chaos and destruction. Sam and Brady become increasingly desperate as the game unfolds, and they start to turn on each other as their friendship is put to the test. As the night goes on, they come to realize that everything they thought they knew about their mysterious caller was not what it seemed, and they are forced to confront the true identity of their tormenter. The performances of the three main actors, Sulkin, Clayton, and Bella Dayne, who plays another key role, are strong and convincing. The film's intense atmosphere is sustained throughout, with strong sound and imagery that heightens the tension and keeps the viewer on edge. The use of social media, text messaging, and the internet as a way of conveying the story adds a modern twist to the classic thriller genre. Overall, Don't Hang Up is a dark and chilling film that explores the potential dangers of social media and the consequences that can result from reckless behavior. The movie is a haunting reminder that the internet is not always a safe place and that it is essential to be mindful of who you talk to and how you engage with them.
