Driller Killer is a gritty and disturbing horror film from the mind of the infamous Abel Ferrara. Originally released in 1979, this special edition of the film presents a remastered version with improved sound quality and additional bonus features that give fans insight into the making of this cult classic. The story follows a struggling artist named Reno Miller (played by Abel Ferrara himself) who slowly descends into madness after being driven to the brink of poverty and desperation in the seedy underbelly of New York City. His nights are filled with the sounds of a punk band rehearsing nearby, driving him to the brink of insanity, while his days are spent trying to create a masterpiece that will save him from his downward spiral.

One day, Reno stumbles upon a power drill and is immediately compelled to use it as a weapon to murder homeless people in the city streets. The kills become increasingly brutal and sadistic as Reno's mental state deteriorates.

The film dives into themes of mental illness, poverty, and the destructive power of artistic obsession. Ferrara's direction is unapologetically raw, presenting the audience with unflinching depictions of violence and depravity. The handheld camera work and guerrilla-style filmmaking add to the film's grungy atmosphere, giving it a documentary-like quality that makes the horror all the more unsettling.

Carolyn Marz plays Reno's girlfriend, Pamela, who becomes increasingly concerned about Reno's behavior but is also struggling in her own way. Baybi Day plays Carol, the lead singer of the punk band that Reno is obsessed with, and her performances are unforgettable, capturing the essence of the outlandish and rebellious punk scene of the late 70s.

The special edition of Driller Killer includes commentary tracks from Abel Ferrara himself and an hour-long documentary called Mulberry Street, which explores the making of the film and features interviews with the cast and crew.

While Driller Killer certainly isn't for everyone, it remains an important piece of underground cinema that challenged the conventions of horror filmmaking and pushed boundaries both artistically and socially. Ferrara's unflinching vision and dedication to his craft shine through in every frame.
