Shortly after the end of the Second World War a well meaning but naive American of German ancestry travels to US occupied Germany to work as a sleeping car conductor for the Zentropa train railway. He tries to steer clear of the volatile post-war politics in which the Allies are weeding out people who are still loyal to the failed regime. Despite his best efforts he gets swept up in events, not the least because he has fallen in love with the beautiful but dangerous daughter of the family that owns the railroad.
