Five Feet Apart
- 2 hr
In this romantic drama, two teens suffering from cystic fibrosis fall in love and develop a relationship despite the fact that their conditions requires them to keep a physical distance from one another. The film opened in 2019. The film follows Stella as she struggles with cystic fibrosis, a progressive disease that makes it difficult for her to breathe. The condition is fatal, and her life expectancy is short. She uses social media to interact with the world, but when she's in the hospital for treatment, she meets another cystic fibrosis sufferer. Will is her age, and they quickly begin to fall for each other. The problem is that cystic fibrosis sufferers are required to stay six feet away from each other because of the danger of transmitting potentially fatal infections between them. The young couple try to build a relationship without being able to physically touch one another. The title of the film comes from their willingness to edge a foot closer to one another than they're supposed to. The film received mixed reviews upon its release. Some critics praised the performance of Haley Lu Richardson in her role as Stella. But most found the plot to be formulaic and full of cliches. The cystic fibrosis community had some concerns with the romanticization of the disease and didn't like the way it was used as a plot device is a formulaic teen romance. The film was directed by Justin Baldoni, an actor known for his role in the TV series Jane the Virgin.
