Forever Into Space is a 2015 independent science fiction film directed by Greg W. Locke. It follows the story of Kelly Sebastian (played by herself), an artist who joins an experimental project to explore the possibilities of space travel. The movie takes place in a near-future world where space exploration has become a privatized industry, driven by corporate interests rather than scientific curiosity. Kelly is approached by a group of scientists who want to see the effects of living in space on a creative mind, and she accepts the invitation to join them on their journey.
The experiment takes place on board of a space station orbiting the Earth, where Kelly and her fellow crew members (played by Oliver Fetter and Tyler Evan Rowe) are isolated from the outside world for months. As they spend more time in space, Kelly's artistic vision starts to merge with the surreal and eerie landscapes they observe from their windows. Her mind becomes a canvas of fantastical and bizarre images that challenge the notions of reality and identity.
The crew's isolation is intensified by the fact that their relations with the Earth's ground control slowly deteriorate. They receive confusing and cryptic messages that make them question the purpose and safety of their mission. As they struggle to maintain communication, their mental state begins to unravel, and they turn to each other for support.
Despite the technical accuracy of the space station's design and the scientific concepts the movie explores, Forever Into Space is not a traditional science-fiction flick. Its focus on the artistic and psychological aspects of space travel is reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, and its dreamlike imagery owes more to David Lynch's Mulholland Drive than to Star Trek.
The film's pacing is slow and thoughtful, allowing the audience to immerse in the crew's mental and emotional states. The trippy visuals and the melodic soundtrack (composed by Steve Horowitz) add to the film's hypnotic atmosphere.
Forever Into Space is a film that requires patience and attention from its viewers. Its narrative is unconventional and ambiguous, leaving many questions unanswered. However, it also offers an evocative and poetic depiction of the human psyche facing the vastness of space. It is a movie that lingers in the mind long after the credits have rolled.
