Freak is a psychological thriller that follows the story of a mousy librarian named Lucy (played by Debbie Rochon), who is fascinated by human abnormalities and deformities. Her obsession leads her to visit a carnival, where she meets a mysterious but charming man named Mr. Aaron (played by Kenton Hoover). Mr. Aaron is the owner of a sideshow where he displays odd and rare human abnormalities. Lucy becomes deeply enamored with Mr. Aaron and is fascinated by the people in his sideshow.
As Lucy spends more time with Mr. Aaron, she becomes more and more involved with the people in his sideshow. One particular member, a woman named Lilith (played by Amelia Duncombe), catches Lucy's attention. Lilith is a woman with a very unique and rare condition that makes her appear as though she has the body of a young girl but the mind of a middle-aged woman. Lucy becomes obsessed with Lilith and begins to crave a deeper connection between them, even though Lilith seems to be resistant to any type of relationship with Lucy.
As Lucy's obsession grows, she begins to have strange and terrifying hallucinations. She sees things that aren't really there, and she becomes increasingly paranoid and delusional. Her life begins to spiral out of control as she becomes more and more entangled with the people in Mr. Aaron's sideshow. Lucy's character is complex and unpredictable, and the viewer is never quite sure what she is going to do next.
The rest of the sideshow members are equally fascinating, including the grotesque Lady Blade (played by Shelby Hightower) who has knives attached to her arms, and the hermaphrodite couple, Jules and Jim (played respectively by Mark D. Valenti and Alison Whitney). They all have their own unique stories, and the movie does a great job of fleshing out their characters and making them more than just caricatures.
The movie is visually stunning, with a lot of attention paid to the atmosphere and the cinematography. The carnival and the sideshow are both beautifully shot, and the use of color and light is particularly impressive. The music is also well done, with an eerie score that adds to the overall creepiness of the movie.
Overall, Freak is a dark and twisted movie that will leave viewers feeling unsettled. It deals with some heavy themes, including obsession, delusion, and exploitation, and it doesn't shy away from showing some pretty disturbing imagery. The characters are all complex and interesting, and the plot is unpredictable and tense. The movie might not be for everyone, as it is quite disturbing at times, but for fans of psychological thrillers and horror movies, it's definitely worth checking out.
Freak is a 2021 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 9 minutes.
