After the Civil War, the country expands so rapidly that this period is dubbed "the Gilded Age." Huge wealth is amassed by "robber barons" and middle class living standards begin to increase after the transcontinental railroad is completed. But the frontier soon closes, Native Americans surrender to reservations, most African Americans resign themselves to poverty, and immigrants pack into fetid slums. Not everyone has won freedom.
