In the 2003 film Godforsaken, a young man named Johannes desperately seeks to connect with his estranged father, whom he has not seen since childhood. His father, Paul, is a former priest who has been living as a recluse in a remote cottage in the Dutch countryside. Johannes is haunted by the memory of his mother's suicide and believes that his father holds the key to understanding her death. Hoping to confront him and get answers, he sets out on a journey to find Paul and confront him about his past.

Along the way, Johannes meets two young women, Mary and Anna, who are both searching for their own sense of purpose and belonging. Mary is a troubled runaway, while Anna is a devout Christian who struggles with her faith.

As they travel deeper into the countryside, the group encounters a series of bizarre and eerie events, including a mysterious cult and a bizarre hallucinogenic drug that seems to have otherworldly effects. Johannes becomes increasingly obsessed with uncovering the truth about his father and his own past, even as he begins to question the very nature of reality itself.

In Godforsaken, director Pieter Kuijpers crafts a haunting and surreal journey through the Dutch countryside, exploring themes of identity, faith, and the human struggle to find meaning in a chaotic world. The film is anchored by strong performances from Egbert Jan Weeber as Johannes, Tygo Gernandt as Paul, and Angela Schijf as Anna, who bring a sense of emotional depth and complexity to their characters.

The film's visual style is equally impressive, with stunning cinematography that captures the rugged beauty of the Dutch landscape. Kuijpers employs a range of stylistic techniques, including dreamlike sequences, flashbacks, and slow-motion shots, to create a sense of disorientation and unease that adds to the film's overall mood of existential angst.

At its core, Godforsaken is a deeply introspective film that grapples with some of life's biggest questions. What is the nature of God and the universe? What is the meaning of life, and how can we find it? The answers are elusive, but the film invites us to join the characters on their journey of discovery, and to ponder these questions for ourselves.

Overall, Godforsaken is a thought-provoking and engrossing film that will appeal to fans of art-house cinema and psychological thrillers alike. It is an impressive early work from Pieter Kuijpers, who has since gone on to direct several acclaimed films and television series in the Netherlands.
