Kos is the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, a place where he practiced and taught his skills. Here, also, we see one of the last citadels, part of the last line of defense against the Ottoman advancement towards Europe. But more than anything else the island is the most popular destination for package tourists, the cafes and discos booming till late into the night being filled mainly by North Europeans. From here we cruise on a sail boat around several of the islands of the Dodecanese, to Kalimnos, an island that still preserves the trade of collecting natural sponges from the bottom of the sea. Next day we board another boat for a day trip to the coast of Turkey, at Bodrum, the legendary city of Halicarnassus that housed its famous Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and with whose stones was built the most far reaching outpost of the Christianity, the Castle of St. Peter, whose towers and ramparts, converted now-a-days in museums and exhibitions, confer spectacular views over the harbor and the sea.
