Video surveillance everywhere, the possibility to tap telephones and mobiles as well as to monitor internet traffic: what George Orwell foretold in his grim futuristic novel of 1949 has today, at least in part, become reality. Fate decreed that Orwell's book title, "1984", would anticipate the year that saw the beginnings of the development of the computer technology.
