Kadawunu Poronduwa is a legendary Sri Lankan black and white film released in 1978. It was directed by Dharmasiri Bandaranayake and starred the iconic actor Vijaya Kumaratunga and Sumana Amarasinghe in lead roles. The story is set in a remote village in Sri Lanka and revolves around the life of a young couple, Siriseana (Vijaya Kumaratunga) and Mallika (Sumana Amarasinghe). Siriseana, a skilled carpenter, lives with his wife and their only daughter in a small hut in the village. Although he does not have much materialistic wealth, Siriseana is content with his simple lifestyle as long as he has his family around him.

However, their peaceful life turns upside down when a wealthy landowner, Kiriya (Joe Abeywickrama), sets his eyes on a piece of land owned by Siriseana. Kiriya, who is notorious for his excessive greed, tries everything in his power to acquire the land from Siriseana at a very low price. He uses various tactics to cheat the simple-minded Siriseana but fails miserably every time.

Frustrated by his failures, Kiriya enlists the support of the village headman and other wealthy landowners in the village to harass Siriseana and force him to sell his land. But even under immense pressure, Siriseana refuses to give up his land, which is the only property he has inherited from his ancestors.

The film takes a dramatic turn when Kiriya, with the help of his henchmen, frames Siriseana for a crime he did not commit. Siriseana is wrongfully accused of stealing the village sacred treasure and is thrown into jail. Facing false allegations and injustice, Siriseana's life takes a dark path.

In the meantime, Mallika takes charge of the family's affairs and tries to find a way to clear Siriseana's name. She seeks the help of a young lawyer, who sympathizes with Siriseana and takes on his case pro bono. The lawyer uncovers the truth behind the false allegations and proves Siriseana's innocence, bringing justice to the family.

Kadawunu Poronduwa is a masterpiece of Sri Lankan cinema, featuring stellar performances by the lead cast, particularly Vijaya Kumaratunga. The movie is also known for its beautiful cinematography, which showcases the lush greenery and scenic beauty of rural Sri Lanka.
