Kanyaka Talkies is a Malayalam film from 2013 directed by K.R. Manoj. The movie is a unique blend of fantasy and drama and delves into the issues of art, cinema, and life in a small village in Kerala. The story revolves around the lives of a group of people who work at a once-thriving movie theater called Kanyaka Talkies. The protagonist of the film is Mony, played by Chempil Asokan, who is a projectionist for the theater. He is a man who has dedicated his life to the art of movies, and Kanyaka Talkies is the only place where he truly feels alive. His passion for cinema, however, is not shared by the other people in the village, and the theater is slowly losing business.

The owners of the theater, Vijayan (Krishnan Balakrishnan) and Mohan (Munshi Baiju), are struggling to keep the theater afloat. They decide to try and save the theater by promising to screen a film starring a famous actor named Prem Nazir. The villagers, however, are not interested in the movie, and the owners are forced to find another way to attract customers.

Then, something strange happens at Kanyaka Talkies. Mony has a dream where a woman visits him and tells him that she is the spirit of cinema. She tells him that she will bring his beloved theater back to life if he makes a sacrifice. Mony believes that the sacrifice will involve losing his life but goes through with it anyway to save the theater.

Without giving away too much of the plot, the story takes a surreal turn, and Mony is transported to a world where he is a hero with his name in lights. The film explores themes of imagination, fantasy, and reality, and the lines between them are frequently blurred.

Apart from the central characters, there are several other people in the village who work at or are associated with the Kanyaka Talkies. The film explores their stories and portrays the struggles faced by people in small villages where there is little opportunity or means for artistic expression.

Overall, Kanyaka Talkies is a well-crafted film that challenges the traditional boundaries of storytelling. It is a movie that celebrates the magic of cinema while exploring deeper themes about life and art. The film is buoyed by strong performances from its cast, especially Chempil Asokan, who delivers a powerful performance as Mony. Kerala's rural life is brought the perfect blend of fantasy and reality in the film.
